Rook
Corvus frugilegus

Size : L44-46cm, WS 81-99cm
Info : The Rook is a familiar farmland bird, gregarious and readily mixes with Jackdaws and other birds. They form large rookeries in the treetops with stick nests, and their loud chattering can be heard from quite a distance. Although quite similar in size and plumage to the Carrion Crow, the Rook has a bare, white bill and more loose plumage around the legs.
Location: Found across western and central Europe, visiting northern Europe during summer.
Sound : Loud, cawing 'graa-gra-gra'.

One of many Rooks that were hanging about on a grassy farmyard edge next to Grafham Water. They were mostly roosting in the trees, or perched on fence posts and farm machinery. One or two were digging in the grass for food, using their bald beak specially suited to the task. [JB 05/12/2004] [Zeiss Diascope 85T* FL + Nikon 4500]
